India will celebrate its 78th Independence Day on August 15, 2024. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will start the festivities by hoisting the national flag at the Red Fort in New Delhi, followed by his annual address to the nation. This will mark Modi’s 11th consecutive Independence Day speech.

The speech and Independence Day celebrations will be broadcast live on Doordarshan and various media channels. Additionally, the event will be streamed on the Press Information Bureau (PIB) YouTube channel and on social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) via @PIB_India and the PMO Twitter handle.
Independence Day Theme and Guests
This year’s theme is ‘Viksit Bharat’ or ‘Developed India,’ reflecting the government’s goal of transforming the nation into a developed country by 2047. Following the Prime Minister’s address, a grand parade will highlight India’s military strength, cultural diversity, and technological advancements.
Special guests for this year’s celebrations include 161 field functionaries from various schemes of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, along with their spouses. These guests, including women workers from Anganwadis and other key programs, will be honored at the Red Fort. On August 14, these guests will tour significant New Delhi landmarks, including the Pradhan Mantri Sangrahalaya and Kartavya Path.
